Nothing says ‘I love you’ like the gift of … extra batteries?

AUSTIN, Texas As Valentine’s Day approaches, you may be struggling to find that last minute gift for your sweetheart. Instead of rushing to the florist or making a last-minute reservation, give your Valentine the gift of preparedness by helping them build an emergency kit.

Nothing says “I love you,” like lifesaving supplies that can provide your Valentine with food, water, light and other essentials in the aftermath of a tornado, flood, hurricane or other natural disaster.

For the cost of flowers and dinner, you can help your Valentine build a kit that could save not only his or her life, but yours. A few items you should have in an emergency kit are

One gallon of water per person per day for at least three days;At least a three day supply of nonperishable food; A battery-powered or hand crank radio;A NOAA weather radio with tone alert;Flashlight;First aid kit;Extra batteries;Whistle to signal for help; Dust mask to help filter contaminated air;Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place;Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation;Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities;Manual can opener; Local maps;Cell phone chargers and battery backup.
