AUSTIN, Texas – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded more than $4.6 million to the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, an eligible nonprofit organization, for repair and replacement at several facilities following Hurricane Harvey.
The archdiocese covers 10 counties and a geographic area of 8,800 square miles. Many of the organization’s churches, schools, offices and playground covers were repaired after the storm. Appliances, playground equipment and office and school furniture were replaced with the grant money.
For some projects, FEMA funded 100 percent of the projects’ costs because the work was completed within 30 days of the disaster declaration while others required a 10 percent nonfederal match.
The grants come from FEMA’s Public Assistance grant program, which reimburses eligible applicants for actions taken in the immediate response to and during recovery from a disaster. These eligible applicants include states, federally recognized tribal governments, U.S. territories, local governments as well as certain private nonprofit organizations such as the archdiocese.
FEMA’s Public Assistance grant program provides project funding directly to the state for disbursement to applicants. The grant to the archdiocese will be disbursed through the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM).
