FEMA grants nearly $52 million to the Texas General Land Office for PREPS program reimbursement

AUSTIN, Texas – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded $51.9 million to the Texas General Land Office as a reimbursement for the management and execution of the Partial Repair and Essential Power for Sheltering (PREPS) program following Hurricane Harvey.  The PREPS program provided emergency repairs and power restoration to single-family, owner-occupied homes. These repairs made the homes safe, sanitary and secure so that the homeowners could return home, rather than shelter in hotels or rental properties, while they continued to work on their full recovery.  The measures taken during...

Check your coverage before disaster strikes

AUSTIN, Texas — The first two weeks of National Preparedness Month focused on helping Americans survive a disaster by encouraging everyone to make and practice their disaster plan and learn lifesaving skills. Week 3 turns attention to the post-disaster phase, when proper insurance can mean the difference between full recovery and financial devastation. No one should rely on federal disaster assistance to make them whole after a catastrophic weather event. Federal assistance is only available if the president declares a disaster, and even then, assistance is likely to be provided in the...

Federal assistance helping restore iconic Fulton convention center

AUSTIN, Texas — The Paws and Taws Convention Center hosted more than five decades of events in Fulton, Texas, before Hurricane Harvey tore through it in August. The beloved structure unfortunately could not be repaired, but its demolition didn’t end the Paws and Taws story or the memories created in the building. Rebuilding the 7,608-square-foot structure and its 1,488-square-foot deck was estimated to cost $2.8 million after winds lifted and damaged the walls, roof, floor and sub-flooring. Fulton received about $603,000 from its insurance settlement for the building.  Then in late April,...

Learn lifesaving skills during National Preparedness Month

AUSTIN, Texas — As a potential cyclone develops in the Gulf of Mexico, the National Preparedness Month campaign reminds us the most important thing to protect in a disaster is your life and the lives of those around you.  A trough of low pressure currently in the western Gulf of Mexico has a 50 percent chance of developing into a cyclone, the National Hurricane Center estimated today. The weather system is expected to reach the western Gulf coast tomorrow morning. Regardless of how the system develops, heavy rain and gusty winds...

Plan ahead during National Preparedness Month

AUSTIN, Texas — Disasters don't plan ahead, but you can. Get yourself and your family ready for the unexpected during National Preparedness Month this September. This year’s theme for National Preparedness Month is: “Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How.” This message recognizes that community members often will be the first ones to take action after a disaster strikes and before first responders arrive, so it is important to prepare in advance. All Americans are encouraged to take time this month to learn lifesaving skills, such as CPR and first aid; check your insurance...
